LAUREN ASATO
Final Project
For my project, I created mixed media/composition pieces. I used a combination of my own photographs, as well as illustrations and digital images. I wanted each piece to be a part of a seemingly random, silly story or issue. While a lot of art addresses bigger political or social issues, which are certainly important, I wanted to take a different approach and think about more everyday occurrences or problems that are often overlooked when considering a subject for art.
I drew inspiration from Yumi Sakugawa, as she creates comics with similar content to what I mentioned above. I also appreciate the simplicity of her illustrations, and so I used speech bubbles like hers to mix with my other medias.
I also drew inspiration from Beth Hoeckel, as I was fascinated by her compositions and how she mixed two realistic ideas into an unrealistic vision, such as people swimming in a soup bowl. This is what inspired my desire to take pictures of my friends/family and realistic objects in everyday life and place them in an unrealistic space.
Lastly, I found inspiration from Alva Skog, as she has also created works that involve a mix of real photography and digital illustrations/works. She also makes me think about imperfection, as the people she creates are not of realistic proportions, and I think this sort of reflects my ideas about everyday-life stories and issues.
